Ryanair: La ingenuidad es un pecado mortal
Cuando se liberaron las autopistas aéreas y empezaron a despegar las agencias de vuelos on-line, todos nos hicimos la misma pregunta: Y esta gente, ¿de qué coño vive? Cuando llegó Ryanair, el caso se volvió particularmente doloroso. Vuelos a cualquier parte de Europa por el precio de un Banana Split. ¿Dónde está el truco?
El truco, según sus responsables, está en quitar los añadidos y recortar gastos. Siguiendo el valioso ejemplo de la compañía aérea que consiguió ahorrar miles de millones quitando una sola aceituna de sus pequeñas ensaladas, Ryanair y todas sus primas decidieron aplicar el modelo hasta sus últimas consecuencias. De este modo, la compañía prescinde de las oficinas, del personal y del equipo que llena las oficinas y del proceso de emisión de billetes. El cliente, por su parte, prescinde de la comida, el café, el espacio para las rodillas y todos los derechos, suplementos y comodidades que acompañan la compra de un vuelo, seguros, cambios y otras banalidades. La agencia no ahorrará dinero quitando una oliva de la ensalada sino cobrándola a cojón de pato junto con todo lo demás.
En principio uno puede prescindir de los cafés y resignarse a pasar una hora y media metiendo los pies en el regazo de un desconocido si viajar a Budapest te va a salir como un fin de semana de marcha sin demasiados excesos. Budapest es bonito y todo el mundo sabe que las mejores historias de amor empiezan de manera especialmente embarazosa. Pero mi última conclusión en este caso particular ha sido ésta: nadie da más por menos. La ingenuidad es un pecado mortal.
Para empezar, no siempre son tan baratas.
Cuando llegas a la web con la boca chorreando agua y al menos uno de los pies puesto ya en algún sitio exótico, lo primero que te encuentras es que no puedes viajar cuando a tí te viene bien, sino cuando ellos te dejan. Aunque el banner diga bien claro que hay billetes a 12 euros para ir a Madagascar, ya puedes probar un rango de dos semanas arriba-dos semanas abajo, que la única fecha en la que la cosa te sale por menos de 120 es un día entre semana que te deja en el lugar a las doce de la noche e implica pasar ocho horas en Stansted. Porque esa es otra: vayas a donde vayas, pasas la noche en Stansted. Y el precio que figura en la pantalla está, con toda probabilidad, en las antípodas del precio final. Las tasas de aeropuerto, impuestos añadidos y otros colorantes y conservantes son la sorpresa que te espera en la cuenta corriente. Al final, entre Stansted y la Luna, billete de ida y billete de vuelta, acabas pagando el triple de lo que tenías pensado. Y, aunque ya estás agotado, no has hecho más que empezar.
Estas compañías vuelan casi siempre desde aeropuertos de mierda. Si incluyes el tren, el taxi o el autobus que te lleva hasta ellos y el tiempo que pierdes en el proceso cargando con la maleta y la botella de agua sin gas, el viaje de cuatro horas se convierte en siete. Para llegar, finalmente, al viejo truco de la letra pequeña. Si no quieres oir cien veces un "pues lo pone bien claro" mientras una azafata octogenaria blande una enorme lupa delante de un papel, observa antes tu maleta con ojo de perista: ¿cuánto dirías que pesa la susodicha maleta? ¿Son necesarios los libros, el aftersun, el líquido de las lentillas y el secador? Porque como la bolsa pese más de lo que pesa tu gato, ya te puedes volver a casa con el rabo entre las piernas: Ryanair te cobra 6 euros por cada kilo de más a partir de siete kilos. Lo normal son 20. Calcula, suma y sigue.
Al final, por supuesto y porque has llegado hasta allí, pagas el suplemento y lo coges porque hasta llegar a esa encrucijada has palmado tanta pasta que no te merece la pena volver aunque sólo te quedan 10 euros para un Bloody Mary barato y un café. Os adelanto que no se tarda ni 20 minutos en desear estar en la cama o en brazos del terapeuta. Si hay algo que caracteriza los vuelos de Ryanair son las turbulencias, fuera y dentro del avión. Y el miedo.
Yo he visto cosas que no creerían
Una que no se asusta ni en la cola del paro tuvo que hacer llamadas a la fuerza para no secuestrar el carrito con las ridículas botellas de alcohol y matar a la única azafata en mi huída loca hacia la cabina. Lo primero que te encuentras es que no hay autobus ni pasillo que te lleva hasta el avión; ahí te las compones bajo vientos huracanados para subir la escalera y darte de ostias con el resto de la tripulación. Porque Ryanair tiene asiento libre, como en algunos cines de versión original. Eso significa que, cuando consigues sentarte en un sitio y descubres (demasiado tarde) que tu vecina de asiento es una profesora loca de literatura inglesa con pánico a las alturas que se pasa todo el viaje agarrándose a tus rodillas y bebiendo cantidades ingentes de ron cacique, no te queda ni la satisfacción de cagarte en la azafata que te colocó el marrón: es culpa tuya. Como todo lo demás.
Independientemente de la profesora borracha y el hecho de que el viaje entero es un programa de centrifugado desde principio a fin, los asientos son tan cutres y están tan pegados que, si el payaso sentado a tu espalda -esto es, el asiento inmediatamente anterior- decide meter la tartera en la redecilla del sofá, llegas al aeropuerto con la necesidad urgente de hacerte un test de embarazo, la prueba del Sida y contarle a tu marido que no te has portado del todo bien. Los cinturones de os asientos recuerdan a algunos aviones de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y el hombrecillo que explica las medidas de seguridad parece uno de los Village People. Lo bueno es que al llegar, como es un aeropuerto enano, tu maleta te está esperando en la cinta transportadora y ya puedes coger un carrito de los que tienden a la derecha y buscar un rincón tranquilo para ponerte a dormir. Que dios bendiga a la preciosa niña que me ofreció llevarme a su casa antes de que saliera mi avión: si alguien conoce a una Jenny, natural de Valencia, que vive ahora en Marble Arch, que la besuquee mil veces de mi parte. Fue lo mejor del viaje, corto pero excepcional.
Justo es decir...
... que durante la noche que pasas en Standsted hay múltiples posiblidades de diversión y que las señoritas que facturan tu vuelo hasta tu próximo destino son bastante más comprensivas con el tamaño de tus maletas que los tarados de Reus. Se me ponen los pelos de punta sólo de imaginar qué hubiera pasado si decido llevarme a mi gato. Mi consejo, si no teneis el tiempo y las tripas de pasar por todo esto pero sí el suficiente para comprar el billete con ntelación, es que elijais una compañía de verdad pero que ofrezca vuelos baratos. Es el caso de Virgin Express o Air Berlin. Te cambian el billete si te equivocas al hacer la reserva (y llamas enseguida) y te mandan la factura a casa como tiene que ser. Salen de aeropuertos normales y no te llevas sorpresas que no se puedan remediar.
Qué horror... He decidido que hasta Sevilla en plena S.S. tiene mejor pinta.

Realmente nunca he volado usando Ryan pero durante el tiempo que vivi en Italia utilice Virgin Express algunas veces y son una maravilla. Te dan un snack ligerito, los avione sy los terminales son limpios y modernos. Su *hub* es Bruselas, de done puedes dentro del mismo aeropuerto tomar un tren a Amsterdam por ejemplo.
Las tasas aeroportuarias y esos gastos te los cobran todas las aerolineas, son generalmente uso de aeropuerto y combustibles.
Y los de los aeropuertos de mierda... eh Stansteed no tiene cache como Heathrow pero son los mismo 40 minutos en taxi que te toma llegar a Londres - y el taxi te cobra lo mismo. Igual que volar a Ciampino y no a Fiumicino en Roma.
En fin, algunos puntos validos si... otros no estoy tan seguro.
